Who we are

We are developing an accelerator program that will enable promising entrepreneurs in the fields of applied biology to solve pressing global problems using tools from the life sciences.

The team

José Hurtado, PhD: José is one of our founders, he has a PhD in Neuroscience from UC Davis, a degree in chemical engineering and is the former Executive Director of Microsystem Chile. José is Chilean and shares Zac’s vision of using the unique opportunities and environment in Chile and adapting it to the special needs of bio-entrepreneurship in order to support innovation.

Zachary Apte, PhD: Zac is one of our founders, he has a PhD in Biophysics from UCSF and has started several companies, like uBiome, EvolveMol and SoilGene. Zac came to Chile as part of Start Up Chile and fell in love with the country, not only with the beauty of the land and its beautiful people, but also with the enormous potential for biotechnology, the abundance of opportunities and a friendly regulatory and institutional environment. As both an entrepreneur and a scientist, he knows the problems of a bio-startup, and is willing to mentor other scientists going into this path.

Guido Núñez-Mujica: Our Spokesman, he got a degree in Biology and Comp. & Phys. Sciences from the Universidad de Los Andes, in Mérida, Venezuela. He is the cofounder of LavaAmp, a biotech startup. He was a TED Global Fellow in 2010 and has more than a decade of experience in science popularization and public speaking. Guido aims to build a bridge between Bioparaíso and future entrpreneurs, talking about biotechnology, its importance and the new perspectives opened by the shrinking cost of technology and new, easier techniques.
